Not to mention the natural expansion of talent to be able to make selection: the geographical barriers that&nbsp;limited the pool of candidates to places close to the company, opening the doors of recruitment to the whole world, are eliminated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><p><\/p>\n<li><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Alternating office and telework increases employee satisfaction<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/mark><\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Off-site&nbsp;work seems to increase staff retention. 81% of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/blog\/post\/survey-productivity-balance-improve-during-pandemic-remote-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FlexJob&nbsp;respondents<\/a>&nbsp;said that having the option to work remotely would significantly increase their attachment to their employer.&nbsp;And not only that: a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/228376781_The_Impact_of_Extent_of_Telecommuting_on_Job_Satisfaction_Resolving_Inconsistent_Findings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;found that employee satisfaction increases with the increased hours of work remotely granted to them. But it stops increasing when you go beyond 15 hours:&nbsp;we like working at a distance&nbsp;, but within the right limits.&nbsp;Employees appreciate flexibility and autonomy, but&nbsp;when&nbsp;telework completely replaces office life and&nbsp;opportunities for employee encounters are reduced,&nbsp;it becomes difficult to nurture the worker-company bond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><p><\/p>\n<li><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Distance work reduces the costs&nbsp;of companies and employees (perhaps)&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/mark><\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Companies get a significant cost reduction: According to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalworkplaceanalytics.com\/work-at-home-after-covid-19-our-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global&nbsp;Workplace&nbsp;Analytics<\/a>, the enterprise can save about $11,000 per year for every employee who works from home&nbsp;at least partially.&nbsp;The savings involve property and utilities costs, but also cleaning services and expenses reimbursements.&nbsp;And they do not only concern companies. Employees alternating between office work and work from home can save&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/globalworkplaceanalytics.com\/pros-cons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">between $2,000 and $6,500 a year<\/a>:&nbsp;just think of gasoline expenses, car maintenance, parking and dining out. But if the work from home is full time, the expenses at the expense of employees can increase significantly. Bills, telephone plans,&nbsp;wi-fi,&nbsp;home office supplies: additional expenses not to be underestimated when teleworking is massive.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Employees could bear the costs of basic office supplies (think ink cartridges) and could even buy desks, chairs, monitors and other office supplies&#8221;,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/cherylwinokurmunk\/2020\/06\/22\/the-hidden-expense-of-working-at-home\/?sh=73ffc77362c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>&nbsp;Patrick Donnelly to Forbes,&nbsp;Vice&nbsp; President and&nbsp;Senior&nbsp;Wealth&nbsp; Advisor&nbsp;at The&nbsp;Colony&nbsp;Group.&nbsp;Then there are even more expenditures under the surface, such as the&nbsp;potential cost&nbsp;of wear of employees&#8217; personal technological devices. &#8220;Home computers, laptops and tablets are working more than ever and these devices will not last as they would otherwise,&#8221; &nbsp;Donnelly&nbsp;continues.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><p><\/p>\n<li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Working at a distance makes us more productive<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;Productivity&nbsp;often increases when people work&nbsp;remotely.&nbsp;According to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Does-working-from-home-work-Evidence-from-a-Chinese-Bloom-Liang\/22a6884551079414cf3b62647b265536a24fa84a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 2015&nbsp;study by Nicholas Bloom<\/a>, professor of economics at Stanford University,&nbsp;a Chinese travel agency&nbsp;that&nbsp;allowed&nbsp;&nbsp;a random group of employees to work remotely for nine months,&nbsp;saw their productivity&nbsp;increase&nbsp; by 13%, generating about $2,000 in annual profits per employee. The CEO of the company expected a decrease in productivity, thinking&nbsp;that&nbsp;telework&nbsp;would&nbsp;lead to&nbsp;savings that would offset lost production. &#8220;But it was good for everyone&#8221;,&nbsp;Bloom&nbsp; explains.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/oiUyyZPIHyY<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Increased productivity&nbsp;comes from&nbsp;the ability of employees to work more efficiently, without interruption from colleagues. People also work longer hours: there are no&nbsp;travel delays, &nbsp;and even their coffee&nbsp;breaks&nbsp;are&nbsp;shorter.&nbsp;More recent studies confirm it. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/eharrington\/files\/harrington_jmp_working_remotely.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> by two economics researchers at Harvard&nbsp;&nbsp;analyzed the performance&nbsp;of call center workers &nbsp;between January 2018 and August 2020. They found that the average worker answered 26 calls a day, or about one every 20 minutes. But by comparing the call records of on-site and remote staff, the researchers found&nbsp;that&nbsp;<em>homeworkers<\/em>&nbsp;took&nbsp;40 seconds more per call&nbsp; &#8211; 12% less productive than office colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><strong>FOUR DISADVANTAGES<\/strong><\/mark><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><p><\/p>\n<li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Teleworking and loneliness: the price to pay&nbsp;is high in terms of sociality<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Working from home means completely giving up the social component of office work. Face-to-face interactions between colleagues&nbsp;are &nbsp;replaced&nbsp;by cold virtual meetings, unable to reproduce genuine encounters between real individuals. This relational flattening has significant consequences for the psychological well-being of workers&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp; Murthy&nbsp;calls it a real &#8220;epidemic of loneliness&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theofficesociety.com\/produttivita-in-azienda-ufficio\/lavoro-remoto-e-solitudine-la-flessibilita-ha-un-prezzo-da-pagare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">let\u2019s talk more about it here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And he\u2019s not the only one. According&nbsp;to&nbsp;Buffer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lp.buffer.com\/state-of-remote-work-2020?utm_source=angellist#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Remote Work Report 2020<\/a>,&nbsp;the&nbsp;greatest hardships of remote working are related to loneliness, as well as the inability to have genuine interactions and effective collaborations. This is also confirmed by the results of&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nbloom.people.stanford.edu\/sites\/g\/files\/sbiybj4746\/f\/wfh.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent study<\/a>&nbsp;conducted by Stanford University in collaboration with&nbsp;Ctrip, China\u2019s largest travel agency. The company\u2019s executives were considering introducing remote work as an alternative to office work and wanted to gather data on the possible impact of such a policy. The experiment initially had&nbsp;positive results: the workers from home declared themselves happier, more productive and more concentrated.&nbsp;In the end&nbsp;, however, more than half of the home workers decided to return to the office, despite&nbsp;an average <em>commuting<\/em>&nbsp;time of 40 minutes &#8211; the loneliness suffered at home was unsustainable.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><p><\/p>\n<li><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><strong>Too much telework&nbsp;is bad for health<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/mark><\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment-studies.co.uk\/resource\/ies-working-home-wellbeing-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to a rapid survey<\/a>&nbsp;of 500&nbsp;<em>homeworkers<\/em>&nbsp;by the Institute for Employment Studies, &nbsp;20% of respondents admit an increase in alcohol consumption, a third say they eat less healthily, 60% exercise less.&nbsp;In addition,&nbsp;64% report sleep problems due to anxiety and 48%&nbsp;suffer from stress caused&nbsp;work with irregular work patterns and long days. A third is lonely.&nbsp;And loneliness is not only a social issue, but also a real health problem, capable of having serious consequences on the psychophysical well-being of the individual. Social isolation makes us more vulnerable to infections and diseases:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiR2_LX86zuAhWxlYsKHVU4BEwQFjAKegQICxAC&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fnews%2Fon-leadership%2Fwp%2F2017%2F10%2F04%2Fthis-former-surgeon-general-says-theres-a-loneliness-epidemic-and-work-is-partly-to-blame%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1mJYaZqPj9UAZFI-eeV54q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doctors talk<\/a>&nbsp;about&nbsp;increased risk of cardiovascular diseases,&nbsp;diabetes,&nbsp;dementia,&nbsp; depression,&nbsp;anxiety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the end, a few days of work at home relieves us of the stress of&nbsp;<em>commuting<\/em>, but if telework becomes massive our health suffers heavily.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><p><\/p>\n<li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">&nbsp;Teleworking imprisons creativity and slows down innovation<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<p><\/p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Creativity&nbsp;needs inspiration&nbsp;and inspiration &nbsp;typically springs from out-of-the-ordinary&nbsp;images, sounds and experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Homeworking<\/em>&nbsp;means not having to leave the house &#8211; &nbsp;the place&nbsp;where you live, eat and sleep&nbsp;also becomes your office.&nbsp;Reduced to zero external stimuli and interesting conversations, the work&nbsp;is reduced&nbsp;to&nbsp;a flat home monotony that can hardly ignite sparks of creativity and innovation.&nbsp;What\u2019s more, the lack of shared spaces where employees can get together and confront each other hinders brainstorming and the incubation of ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" class=\"wp-image-1089\" src=\"https:\/\/stella33.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/write-839225_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stella33.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/write-839225_640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/stella33.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/write-839225_640-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stella33.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/write-839225_640-119x80.jpg 119w, https:\/\/stella33.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/write-839225_640-394x265.jpg 394w, https:\/\/stella33.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/write-839225_640-149x100.jpg 149w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p><\/p>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo of <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/it\/users\/congerdesign-509903\/?utm_source=link-attribution&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=image&amp;utm_content=839225\">congerdesign<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/it\/?utm_source=link-attribution&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=image&amp;utm_content=839225\">Pixabay<\/a><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is demonstrated by&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/europe\/features\/flexible-ways-of-working-are-here-to-stay-finds-new-european-research-with-leaders-focused-on-maintaining-culture-and-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Microsoft study<\/a>&nbsp;based on interviews with 9,000 managers and employees in 15 European markets. &nbsp;Teleworking, while stimulating the productivity of employees,&nbsp;affects&nbsp;their creativity to the point of slowing down the drive to corporate innovation.&nbsp;Last year, the report said, up to 56% of leaders thought their businesses were offering innovative products and services; as remote work increased, by 2020, the percentage had dropped to 40%.&nbsp;Alarming results in a world where creativity and innovation drive are essential to stay ahead of the competition. Not surprisingly, faced with the numbness of the creativity of&nbsp;<em>homeworkers<\/em>&nbsp;many companies have decided to back off and return to traditional offices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\"><p><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis: 50%;\"><p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2013, Yahoo\u2019s then-CEO, Marissa Mayer, caused a stir for forcing employees back into the office after a disappointing telework experiment. &#8220;To become the best workplace ever, collaboration and communication will be important, so we need to work <em>side-by-side<\/em>. To the point that 42% of respondents said they felt more stressed and overwhelmed than when they were in the office. Telework has in fact significantly lengthened the working day: according to data from&nbsp;NORDVPN,&nbsp;a company specialized in the provision of network services,&nbsp; generalized broadcasting of telework in 2020 has led people to work up&nbsp;to two extra hours a day in Europe and three hours in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/economy_and_business\/2020-08-11\/chronic-stress-and-endless-hours-were-we-ready-to-work-from-home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">We are not in control<\/a> of the situation and we are under chronic stress. There is no respite. (&#8230;) We work under the umbrella on the beach, at home, in the office, at all hours. It\u2019s the first thing we do when we wake up and the last thing we do before we go to bed. We don\u2019t have time for recovery or rest&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><cite>FRANCISCO&nbsp;D\u00cdAZ&nbsp;BRETONES &#8211; PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY IN THE FACULTY OF LABOUR RELATIONS AND HUMAN RESOURCES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: left;\">RADICAL SOLUTIONS DO NOT HELP<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Perhaps the most common misconception about the adoption of virtual work is that it is an all-or-nothing issue&nbsp;: either you choose office or telework, out of the way.&nbsp;But does this paradigm force&nbsp;companies and workers to make a&nbsp;radical choice: autonomy or collaboration? Productivity or creativity?&nbsp;Loneliness or&nbsp;sociality?&nbsp;It is neither wise nor effective to turn your back on the benefits of having a virtual workforce. But it is also true that telework&nbsp;risks&nbsp;making &nbsp;us lose something that is an integral part of what makes&nbsp;companies places &#8220;human&#8221; as well as productive:&nbsp;human interactions&nbsp;and the sense&nbsp;of purpose that only face-to-face meetings can build.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The way to meet both needs is to merge&nbsp;the two modes, alternating&nbsp;remote work with moments of interaction and confrontation in the office: isolate to focus, come together to collaborate.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teleworking means flexibility, autonomy and productivity, but also stress, loneliness and an unstable life-work balance.
